History of Black Friday

The tradition of shopping on the day after Thanksgiving is said to have started with the least likely of people, many years ago. While it has grown into one of the most prominent retail days (second only to Christmas), this Black Friday deals bonanza can be traced back to almost 100 years ago; when merchants needed an event to boost post-Thanksgiving Day sales.

The first documented case was in 1924. At that time, Kenneth L. Roberts, a reporter for The New York Times, wrote an article about how bargain hunters were up at dawn for post-Thanksgiving Day bargains.

That year, so many shoppers turned up on Black Friday that police officers had to form a human wall against the crowd to hold them back, according to a news account from that day.

Tradition of Small Business Saturday

The first Saturday after Thanksgiving is known as Small Business Saturday and was created by American Express to encourage holiday shoppers to shop at smaller, local businesses.

The reasoning behind this campaign was that during the Great Recession (December 2007 – June 2009), many Americans were hesitant to spend money and instead chose to save it.

By encouraging people to buy from their local merchants, they would be supporting the economy of their own communities and increasing jobs.
